A worked example: a Women's M sweater (CYC standard) with 2 inches of classic ease and 18 sts / 4″ worsted gauge. Here's exactly how the math flows.
Women's M · 37 in bust · +2 in ease
Finished bust = 39 in. Worsted gauge of 18 sts / 4″.
Step 01 · Body measurement
Start with the standard.
The Craft Yarn Council Women's M is 37″ bust. Match the wearer's actual bust to the closest standard size for the most natural fit.
Step 02 · Add ease
Pick how the sweater should fit.
2 inches of "classic" ease — comfortable, not tight. Form-fitting would be −2; oversized would be +8. Pick by the look you want.
Step 03 · Convert to stitches
Multiply by gauge.
Cast on 176 stitches for the body. Round up to the nearest multiple your stitch pattern needs — k2/p2 ribbing rounds to 176 cleanly; a 6-stitch lace repeat would need 180.
