Tip · A 6″ square in worsted weight uses about 22 yards. Smaller squares mean more pieces but a denser, drapier blanket.

04Joining method
How you'll attach the squares

Whip stitch is the most popular finishing seam — nearly invisible from the front, with about 0.15 yd per inch of seam.

See a granny-square blanket come together.

A worked example with real numbers. Plan a 50″ × 60″ throw from 6″ worsted squares — square count, yardage, skein total, all the way to a four-color split.

50 in (8 squares)

60 in (10 squares)

8 × 10 = 80 squares

50" × 60" throw, 6" worsted squares, four colors evenly distributed.

Step 01 · Grid

How many squares fit in each direction?

50 in÷4 in
=8 wide
50 in÷6 in
=10 tall

Divide each dimension by your square size and round to whole squares. Eight across, ten down, eighty squares total.

Step 02 · Yarn per square

Pick the right yardage factor.

0.61 yd/in²×6×6
=22 yd / square

Worsted-weight squares average 0.61 yards per square inch. Multiply by the square area for the per-square estimate. Lighter weights take more yards per square inch; bulky takes less.

Step 03 · Total yardage

Multiply squares by yards.

80 squares×22 yd
=1,760 yd

Add joining and border yardage on top if you're using them. A whip-stitch join at 0.15 yd / in adds about 80 yards for this size; a 3-round border adds about 230 more.

Step 04 · Skeins & split

Round up, then divide by color.

1,760 yd÷220 yd/skein
=1,760 yd
8 skeins÷4 colors
=2 skeins each

Always round up to whole skeins per color. Buy them all at once from the same dye lot to avoid stripes that aren't supposed to be there.
